Heritage craft reimagined
“Wow! A symphony”
Although I have focused more on ceramics in the last couple of years, glass blowing was my first love. Here’s a selection of the pieces I made after a study trip to Murano, the glass island close to Venice, Italy. I had the privilege of experiencing first hand the incredible skill and talent of some of the best glass maestros in the world and it inspired this series.
The round ‘murrine’ in my pieces are made by layering colour, stretching it out in a long rope while still molten and then slicing thin sections. These rings of colour (murrine) can be warmed and positioned in the glass blowing process. It’s a long but satisfying process.
I like to re-use shards of colour and pieces saved from the cullet bucket in my blown glass globes to create a painterly, abstract design. This is a sustainable way of recycling coloured glass discarded in the making process.
